Ask an Author: October 2022 Edition

Every month, I'll bring you a few of the most common questions I get. Do you have a burning question? Email me at matilda@matildareyes.com.

  • Do you follow book blogs?

Not really. About once a month, I scan a few of the ones I'd submit just to see what

reviewers are looking for in my genre.

  • Do you read reviews? If so, how do you process negative reviews?

Yes, unfortunately. Last year, I had the good fortune to hang out with some NY Times

bestsellers and Hugo award winners, and they all said the same thing - it's bad for your mental

health. I don't want to ride a high of positive reviews, and I don't want to hit a low when

people are negative about my work. However, I do want to know if certain aspects that

concern me come up in reviews. For instance, with Unearthly Magik, I wanted to see what

folks said about my use of Spanish in the text. It's gotten a mixed reception, but I still feel

confident in my decision to include the characters' native language.

  • Do you attend book signings?

Yes, though I mostly attend comic conventions. They have a much bigger audience than the

book fairs, and I love meeting people who are excited about the genre. I'm currently working

on my 2023 schedules, and I'll post it as soon as I know where I'm going.

However, if you're in South Florida, you don't have to wait that long. I'll be one of many

indie authors at Sweet Haven Books in Miami for their Fall Bookworms Festival on October

9th from 1 pm to 6 pm. They're also stocking my book to be sold there, a first for me.

  • Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

Yes! I'm lucky to have a group of Advanced Reader Copy readers who give me feedback. We

have a private group where we talk about all things books. Want to get in on the good gossip?

Email me at matilda@matildareyes.com.

Tune in for more questions in November!
